Publication Assistant Job Posting

As the University of Alberta’s official student life blog, YouAlberta strives to produce witty, insightful, and thoughtful online content for the U of A community. As the Publication Assistant, you’ll work under the guidance of the Internal Communications Specialist, University Relations, to publish and share top notch content for your fellow students. You’ll be responsible for the online layout of YouAlberta stories, which will include: short videos, original features, “Top [insert number here]” lists, photo essays, and interactive quizzes. The Publication Assistant will also be responsible for sharing YouAlberta content on a variety of YouAlberta social media channels.

The Publication Assistant will spend the summer months helping to move the U of A’s internal blogs (YouAlberta and The Quad) to a new blogging platform. This will involve adjusting layouts and updating old content. The Publication Assistant will also use this time to work with the Internal Communications Specialist to develop the YouAlberta social media strategy.

Duties will include:

  • On a weekly basis, upload and design the layout for new stories on YouAlberta
  • Assist with the transfer of existing YouAlberta content from Blogger to a new TBD blogging platform (July)
  • Assist with the transfer of existing content on The Quad from Blogger to a new TBD blogging platform (July)
  • Work with the Internal Communications Specialist to create the YouAlberta Social Media Strategy
  • Assist with the implementation of the YouAlberta Social Media Strategy
  • Regularly update and monitor YouAlberta’s social media platforms for the purpose of promoting YouAlberta and its stories
  • Attend monthly meetings with the YouAlberta Blogging Team to help develop the monthly publication schedule
  • Adjust and edit photos, memes, and infographics for YouAlberta stories
  • Represent YouAlberta during promotional events.
  • Attending training sessions, monthly staff meetings, and regular mentoring/editorial sessions.

This is a part-time position that will involve the completion of 36 hours in the month of July, and three hours per week (Monday – Friday; between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) from August 2017 to April 2018.

Salary:

$15 per hour

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Alberta
  • Experience using social media, including Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, especially writing for the web and creating short social posts
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment in social media posts
  • Familiarity with photo-editing, gif creation, and meme making tools
  • Experience and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve strategic goals
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information clearly and succinctly
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with blogging platforms including Blogger, Medium, and/or Wordpress
  • Experience uploading and maintaining web content
